The History of the Swedish Student Cap
The Swedish student cap as a headgear was created in Uppsala on April 9, 1845, in connection with the Uppsala students feeling the need for a common characteristic before a Nordic student meeting in Copenhagen.
Before a student meeting in Copenhagen, the Uppsala students discussed whether they should create a cap as a special characteristic for the trip. The decision was made quickly, but there was a debate about the design of the cap - should the brim be white or black? Many were skeptical about a white brim as it would be worn on the steamboat across the Sound. But the white cap was a success and had a longer lifespan than the creators could have dreamed of.
From the beginning, the matriculation exam was held as an entrance exam at the university and the student cap became a sign that one was a university student. The cap was worn daily from valborg (April 30) to October 1. In 1862, the matriculation exam was moved to high schools and educational institutions.
