During the mid-19th century, the straw hat became a popular headwear for both men and women in Europe. In Sweden, straw hats were woven not least in Ärtemark in Dalsland, where until the 1930s, the inhabitants had the production as an important secondary income.

    Raffia Straw hats
Raffia is a natural fiber that comes from the leaves of the Raffia palm tree (Raphia farinifera) are a genus of about twenty species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, and especially Madagascar. Raffia and can often be confused with straw. Although both natural products, they are very different in both their origin and attributes. We at CTH Ericson believe that Raffia is the best material to make straw hats from, as they have high quality, long durability and provide good protection against the sun. Unlike straw, raffia contains a natural resin in its leaves that gives it longevity, it makes the fibre flexible, pliant, wonderfully resilient, and moderately waterproof, which prevents the fibre from cracking and becoming brittle over time. Raffia is a sustainably harvested material, juvenile leaves are pruned by hand to ensure the plant isn’t damaged during the harvest process, preserving the health of the plant so it may continue to grow and flourish. The leaves are then dried naturally in the sun. Once dried, the fibre is sorted and separated into different grading qualities, according to colour, texture, length and width.
